Checking tire pressure is a 90-second job, but only if you do it right. The three things most people get wrong: they check after driving (when the tires are warm and read 3–5 PSI high), they use the sidewall max as the target (which is an upper limit, not a target), and they trust the gas station gauge that’s been sitting in the cold for six months (often off by 5+ PSI).
Done correctly, you check cold tires with an accurate gauge against the pressure spec on your driver’s door jamb. Done that way, the check is fast, repeatable, and actually useful for catching slow leaks and underinflation before they cost you in fuel economy or uneven wear.

What You Need

- Knowledge of your spec. The number on the driver’s door jamb sticker, not the sidewall.
- Cold tires. First thing in the morning before driving, or after the car has sat for at least 3 hours. Spec pressures are always cold pressures.
- An air compressor (optional, but useful). For topping up. Portable units run $25–$80 and plug into your 12V outlet. Gas station compressors work too, just plan for the drive there to warm the tires (and add 3–5 PSI to your target to compensate).
Step by Step
- 1. Check first thing in the morning or after the car has been parked for at least 3 hours. Tires gain 3–5 PSI as they heat up from driving; “warm” readings are misleading.
- 2. Find your spec. Open the driver’s door. Look at the B-pillar (the metal pillar between the front and rear doors) or the door edge itself. The sticker lists cold front pressure, cold rear pressure, and sometimes spare. Note: front and rear may be different, especially on trucks and minivans.
- 3. Unscrew the valve stem cap on the first tire. Put the cap in your pocket so you don’t lose it.
- 4. Press the gauge firmly onto the valve stem. You’ll hear a brief hiss as the gauge seats, then it goes silent when the seal is good. Hold for a full second to let the reading stabilize.
- 5. Read the gauge. Note the number.
- 6. Compare to spec. Within 2 PSI is fine. More than 2 PSI off — adjust.
- 7. Reinstall the valve cap finger-tight. Caps keep dirt out and prevent the valve from freezing in winter; don’t skip this.
- 8. Repeat for all four tires. Plus the spare if you have one (often runs higher pressure than the main tires).
If a Tire Reads Low
Add air until you hit the spec. Procedure:
- Connect your compressor to the valve stem. Compressor chuck pushes onto the valve, gauge starts reading.
- Add air in 1–2 second bursts, checking between each. Pressure rises fast.
- Stop 1 PSI shy of your target. Removing the chuck releases a small puff of air. Re-check with your gauge and adjust if needed.
If a tire keeps reading low after you’ve topped it up, you have a slow leak. Common sources: a nail or screw in the tread (often invisible), a corroded rim where the tire bead seals to the wheel, or a leaking valve stem. A tire shop can find and patch the leak for $25–$40, usually while you wait.
If a Tire Reads High
Bleed off pressure with your gauge or a finger. Most pressure gauges have a small bleeder valve or you can use the back of the gauge to depress the valve stem core:
- Press the bleeder valve or valve core for 1 second. Air hisses out. Re-check.
- Stop 1 PSI above target and re-check. Removing the gauge releases more air than you’d expect.
If a tire keeps reading high, it’s because the previous person who set the pressure (you or a tire shop) overfilled it. There’s no leak to find — just bleed it down and recheck monthly.
How Often to Check
- Monthly at minimum, for all four tires plus the spare.
- Before any long trip. Sustained highway driving is the worst-case stress for underinflated tires.
- After a major temperature change (a cold front, the first cold snap of winter, etc.). Pressure drops about 1 PSI per 10°F temperature drop.
- Whenever the TPMS warning comes on. Don’t just reset the light — check all four tires to find which is low.
TPMS is helpful but it’s a late warning. Most systems don’t trigger until pressure is 25% below spec — usually 7–10 PSI low. Monthly manual checks catch the problem long before the light comes on.
Gauge Accuracy and Choosing the Right Tool
- Pencil-style gauges: cheap but inaccurate. Skip.
- Analog dial gauges: $15–$30. Most popular choice for home use. Accurate to about ±1 PSI. The Accutire MS-4021B and the Milton S-921 are well-regarded.
- Digital gauges: $15–$40. Easier to read; battery-dependent. Accurate to about ±0.5 PSI on better models.
- Built-in compressor gauges: often less accurate than a standalone gauge. Use them for filling, then verify with a good gauge.
- Gas station gauges: proceed with caution. Many are old, dirty, or out of calibration. Bring your own gauge to double-check what they read.
Common Mistakes
- Checking after driving. Hot tires read 3–5 PSI higher than cold. If you check after a drive and adjust to spec, you’ve just underinflated your tires.
- Filling to the sidewall max. The sidewall number is an absolute ceiling, not a target. Use the door-jamb spec.
- Only checking when the TPMS light comes on. By then, pressure is 7–10 PSI low — long past optimal.
- Skipping the spare. Spare tires lose pressure faster than mounted tires (they’re rarely flexed). Many drivers discover their spare is flat the day they need it.
- Using the same pressure front and rear without checking. Many trucks, minivans, and load-carrying SUVs have different front and rear specs. The door-jamb sticker tells you both.
