Uneven tire wear is a symptom, not a cause. The pattern itself tells you what’s wrong — inflation, alignment, suspension components, or how the tires are rotated. Figure out the cause first, fix it, and only then decide whether the tires are salvageable or need to be replaced.

Replacing tires without fixing the underlying issue is the most expensive thing you can do. New tires wear in the same pattern as the old ones — just faster, because they’re starting with more tread to lose. Drivers who skip the diagnosis often end up replacing four perfectly good tires twice in a year, when one alignment and one set of struts would have prevented all of it.

This guide walks through the seven most common wear patterns, what each one means, and what to do about it.

The Quick Diagnostic

Before you read the patterns, do this 60-second visual check:

  • Look at all four tires. Walk around the vehicle.
  • Run your hand across the tread. Front to back, side to side. You can feel asymmetric wear (cupping, feathering) with your fingertips that’s hard to see with your eyes.
  • Compare the inside edge to the outside edge. Bend down and look at the inner edge that faces the engine. This is where the worst-kept secrets live, because most drivers never look there.

If you find a wear pattern, match it to one of the seven below.

1. Center Wear

  • What it looks like: The center of the tread is significantly more worn than the edges. Run your hand across the tire and you’ll feel a dip in the middle.
  • What it means: Your tires are overinflated. Excess pressure crowns the contact patch, putting more of the vehicle’s weight on the center of the tread and less on the edges.
  • How to fix it: Set pressure to the spec on the driver’s door jamb (not the sidewall max). Check pressure monthly when the tires are cold. This is a $0 fix if you have a tire pressure gauge.

2. Edge Wear (Both Sides)

  • What it looks like: Both the inside and outside edges of the tread are worn more than the center.
  • What it means: Your tires are underinflated. Low pressure causes the sidewalls to flex outward, putting more load on the edges of the tread and less on the center. This also overheats the tire and drops fuel economy.
  • How to fix it: Same as center wear, opposite direction — set pressure to the door-jamb spec. If you keep finding low pressure, you may have a slow leak (valve stem, rim seal, or a slow puncture) worth tracking down.

3. Inner Edge Wear

  • What it looks like: Only the inside edge (the side closest to the engine) is worn faster than the rest of the tread.
  • What it means: Too much negative camber — your wheel is tilting inward at the top more than the factory spec allows. The cause is usually alignment drift, worn control arm bushings, ball joints, sagging springs, or in performance vehicles, an intentionally lowered suspension without proper camber correction.
  • How to fix it: Start with an alignment check ($20–$40 just to measure). If camber is out of spec and other components check out, a four-wheel alignment ($80–$150) typically resolves it. 4. Outer Edge Wear

  • What it looks like: Only the outside edge (away from the engine) is worn faster than the rest.
  • What it means: Positive camber — your wheel is tilting outward at the top. Less common than inner wear. Causes are similar: alignment drift (often after curb strike), worn ball joints, or worn lower control arm bushings.
  • How to fix it: Same diagnostic flow as inner wear — alignment check first, then suspension inspection. The fix cost range is the same.

5. Cupping or Scalloping

  • What it looks like: A series of high and low spots around the tire, like the surface of a golf ball but stretched. You’ll often hear it before you see it — a “wump-wump-wump” sound at certain speeds that changes with road surface.
  • What it means: Shock or strut damping has failed on that corner. As the wheel bounces over road imperfections, the failed shock can’t control it, and the tire slaps the road in a rhythmic pattern. Each slap scrubs a little rubber off the same general region. Over thousands of miles, those slap zones become visible scallops.
  • How to fix it: Replace shocks or struts on the affected axle (always in pairs). $400–$1,200 per axle depending on the vehicle and whether full strut assemblies or just shocks are needed. Cupping doesn’t smooth out after the shocks are replaced — the tire is permanently scalloped and will continue making noise. Plan to replace cupped tires within 6 months.

6. Feathering

  • What it looks like: The tread blocks have a sharp edge on one side and a slanted, rounded edge on the other. You can feel it clearly by running your hand across the tread in both directions — smooth one way, ridged the other.
  • What it means: Toe is out of alignment. The wheel is pointed slightly inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) of where it should be, scrubbing the tread sideways with every revolution. Almost always shows up on front tires, but rear toe issues happen on independent rear suspensions too.
  • How to fix it: A standard alignment ($80–$150) resets toe to spec. Feathering on a fresh set of tires usually means you need an alignment now, not after the tires are bald.

7. Patchy or Spot Wear

  • What it looks like: Localized worn areas around the tire, irregular and not following any clear pattern. Often confused with cupping but the spots are bigger and more random.
  • What it means: Imbalance — one or more wheels are out of balance. The heavy spot of the tire/wheel bounces against the road every revolution, wearing a localized spot. Can also be caused by a bent wheel or, occasionally, internal tire defects.
  • How to fix it: Rebalance the wheels ($15–$40 per wheel). Inspect for bent rims while the tires are off. If a wheel is bent, it can sometimes be repaired ($75–$150) or may need replacement.

The Shared Diagnostic Sequence

If you have any uneven wear pattern, this is the order to chase it:

  • 1. Check tire pressure. Cheapest, fastest fix for two of the seven patterns. Set to the door-jamb spec when tires are cold.
  • 2. Get an alignment check. $20–$40 just for the measurement. The printout tells you exactly which angle on which wheel is out of spec. Most shops will do the check for free if you commit to having the alignment done.

Can the Tire Be Saved?

Depends on how severe the wear is and whether the cause has been fixed:

  • Caught early, cause fixed, worn spot still above 6/32″: usually keep the tire. The wear stops once the cause is fixed.
  • Caught moderately, worn spot at 4/32″–5/32″: judgment call. If the rest of the tread has plenty of life left, keep them. If you’re close to replacement anyway, replace and start fresh.
  • Caught late, worn spot at or below 4/32″: replace. Wet-weather performance is already compromised at the worn area, and the asymmetry won’t even out.
  • Cords or fabric showing anywhere: replace immediately. The tire is structurally compromised.

The rule that matters most: never replace tires without fixing the underlying cause. Whatever wore your old tires unevenly will do the same thing to your new ones.
