A good tire tread depth is anything at or above 4/32″ for most driving conditions. That’s deep enough to evacuate water effectively, stop your car in a reasonable distance on wet pavement, and give you predictable handling. The legal minimum in most states is 2/32″ — but legal and safe are two very different things.
The honest answer depends on what you’re driving in. A daily commuter in a dry climate can run tires down to 4/32″ without much risk. A driver in the Pacific Northwest or anywhere with frequent heavy rain should start shopping at 5/32″. If you drive in snow at all, the threshold is higher still — 6/32″ or you should be on dedicated winter tires.

The Quick Answer
If you just want the bottom line, here’s where each tread depth puts you:
- 10/32″–11/32″ — New. This is where most passenger and light truck tires start. Maximum water evacuation, shortest wet stopping distance, best snow traction.
- 6/32″–9/32″ — Good. You’re in a healthy range for all driving conditions. Wet performance is still strong, snow traction is acceptable, and you don’t need to think about replacement for a while.
- 5/32″ — Good for most, marginal for winter. Still safe for dry and moderate wet driving. If you regularly drive in snow, this is the point to start watching closely or to switch to dedicated winter tires.
- 4/32″ — The practical replacement point. Wet stopping distance from 70 mph has grown by roughly 100 feet compared to new tires. You’re still safe in normal conditions, but heavy rain becomes risky. This is where I recommend most drivers start shopping.
- 3/32″ — Risky. Wet performance drops sharply. You can probably finish out the season, but you’re gambling on weather and luck.
- 2/32″ — Legal minimum. Replace immediately. Your wet stopping distance is nearly double what it was when the tires were new. Hydroplaning risk is severe. The tires are essentially bald.
Why 4/32″ Is the Safe Replacement Threshold (Not 2/32″)
Most state laws say 2/32″ is the legal minimum tread depth. That doesn’t mean 2/32″ is safe — it means a cop can’t ticket you for it. The actual safety case is built on wet stopping distances, and the data is brutal.

The relationship isn’t linear. At 6/32″ you’ve lost a bit of margin. At 4/32″ you’ve lost a lot. Below 4/32″ the curve gets steep fast — every 1/32″ of additional wear adds far more stopping distance than the one before it. That’s why 4/32″ is the practical safe threshold even though it’s twice the legal minimum.
The other half of the equation is hydroplaning. Tread grooves exist to channel water out from under the tire. As they wear down, the tire’s ability to move water decreases — and at some point, the tire can’t displace water fast enough and lifts off the road surface entirely. Hydroplaning risk increases gradually from 6/32″ down to 4/32″, then sharply below it.
Adjustments for Different Conditions
Wet Climate Driving
If you drive in regular heavy rain — Seattle, Portland, the Gulf Coast, the Southeast — bump the safe threshold up. 5/32″ is a more conservative replacement point. Anything below that and you’re trusting the tread that’s left to do work it’s marginally equipped for.
Winter Driving
Snow needs significantly more tread than rain to maintain traction. Snowflakes get packed into the tread grooves, and those packed-snow surfaces grip each other better than rubber grips snow. The shallower your tread, the less packing happens, and the worse your traction gets.
- 6/32″ or more on all-season tires for occasional winter use.
- Dedicated winter tires if you live somewhere with regular snow and ice. Their compound stays soft below 45°F where all-seasons start to harden, and they have aggressive tread patterns purpose-built for snow.
- Replace winter tires at 5/32″ — they wear out for winter use long before they hit the standard 4/32″ threshold for all-season tires.
Highway Commuters
The wet stopping distance numbers above are measured at 70 mph. If you spend most of your driving at highway speeds, your worst-case stopping situation will be at those speeds. That’s an argument for replacing at 5/32″ rather than 4/32″ — a 100-foot longer stopping distance at 70 mph is the difference between stopping in time and not.
How to Check Your Tread Depth
The Tread Depth Gauge (Most Accurate)
A metal tread depth gauge costs $5–$15 and gives you a precise reading in 32nds of an inch. Insert the probe into the main tread groove (not the wear indicator bar), press the base flat against the rib on either side, and read the measurement.
Check at least three points on each tire — the inner edge, the center, and the outer edge. If the readings differ by more than 2/32″ across the tire, you have uneven wear (alignment, inflation, or rotation issues) that needs attention regardless of remaining depth.
The Quarter Test (Best Coin Test)
Place a quarter upside down (Washington’s head into the tread) in the deepest part of a main groove. If the tread touches the top of Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32″ remaining — you’re in the safe range. If you can see space above his head, you’re below 4/32″ and should start shopping.
The Penny Test (Not Recommended)
The classic penny test — if Lincoln’s head shows above the tread, replace your tires — uses 2/32″ as the threshold. That’s the legal minimum, not the safety minimum. By the time the penny test fails, you’ve been in the danger zone for a while. Use the quarter test instead.
Wear Indicator Bars
Every modern tire has small rubber bars molded across the tread grooves at 2/32″ depth. When the tread wears down level with these bars, you’re at the legal minimum. They’re useful as a last-chance warning but they’re set at the danger threshold, not the safe one.
When the Tread Isn’t the Whole Story
Good tread depth is necessary but not sufficient. Replace your tires sooner if any of these are true, even if you have plenty of tread remaining:
- The tires are 6 or more years old regardless of remaining tread. Rubber compounds harden with age and lose grip even when tread depth looks fine. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall (last 4 digits = week and year of manufacture).
- You see sidewall cracks, bulges, or bubbles. Sidewall damage doesn’t get better. Replace immediately.
- Tread wear is uneven across the tire. A center-worn or edge-worn tire isn’t doing its full job no matter how much rubber remains. Fix the underlying cause (inflation, alignment, suspension) and decide whether to replace the tire.
- You see cords or wire showing through the rubber. The tire has failed structurally. Replace today, not tomorrow.
- Vibration or pulling. Could be balance, alignment, or internal tire damage. Have it inspected.
Bottom Line
A good tire tread depth is 4/32″ or deeper for everyday dry and moderate-wet driving, 5/32″ or deeper if you drive in heavy rain or at highway speeds most days, and 6/32″ or deeper on all-season tires if you drive in snow. The legal minimum of 2/32″ is a “don’t get a ticket” threshold, not a safety threshold — treat it that way.
