Tire chains are the only traction device that will reliably get a vehicle up a snow-covered mountain pass when the highway patrol has closed it to everything else. They’re also loud, slow, awkward to fit in freezing weather, and capable of destroying a fender if you get them wrong.

Most drivers only think about chains when they’re already standing in the snow at a chain-control checkpoint, which is the worst possible time to learn how they work. Getting it right in advance costs an hour in your driveway on a dry afternoon.

What Tire Chains Actually Do

A tire generates grip through friction between rubber and road. On packed snow and ice, that friction collapses — there’s a layer of compressed crystals and meltwater between your tread and anything solid, and no rubber compound fully solves that.

Chains change the mechanism entirely. Instead of relying on friction, steel links press into the snow surface and physically key into it. You’re no longer asking rubber to stick to ice; you’re asking steel to dig into a soft layer and push against it. That’s why a chained-up two-wheel-drive sedan can climb a grade that stops an all-wheel-drive SUV on all-season tires.

The trade-off is that this only works when there’s something to bite into. On bare pavement, chains have nothing to key into, so you get reduced contact patch, terrible braking, a brutal ride, and rapid wear on both the chains and the road. This is the single most important thing to understand about chains: they are for snow and ice, and they come off the moment the road clears.

When Chains Are Legally Required

Chain laws are almost never blanket, year-round rules. They’re conditional restrictions that get activated when conditions deteriorate, and they’re posted on roadside signs and highway advisory systems as numbered levels.

California’s system is the one most drivers encounter, and it’s typical of how western states structure it:

  • R1 — Chains required on all vehicles except those with snow tires on the drive axle.
  • R2 — Chains required on all vehicles except four-wheel and all-wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels.
  • R3 — Chains required on every vehicle, no exceptions. R3 is rare and usually precedes a full closure.

Note what R2 means in practice: all-wheel drive on its own does not exempt you. You need all-wheel drive and four snow tires. An AWD crossover on all-seasons gets turned around at an R2 checkpoint like anything else.

Other states structure it differently — Colorado runs a Traction Law and a more severe Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, and several eastern states have no chain law at all but do restrict studs by season. Some jurisdictions also require you to carry chains on certain routes during winter months even when conditions are clear.

Chains, Cables, And Socks

Three different products get sold as “chains,” and they are not interchangeable.

Traditional Link Chains

Steel links in a ladder or diamond pattern across the tread. Best traction, longest life, and the only option that satisfies every chain-control level. They also need the most clearance and give the roughest ride. Diamond patterns are noticeably smoother and grip better laterally than the cheaper ladder patterns.

Cables

Steel aircraft cable wrapped in alloy rollers. Lower profile, lighter, much easier to fit, and quieter to drive on. They accept far less clearance, which matters because a lot of modern vehicles simply don’t have room for link chains. The trade-off is grip and durability — cables wear faster and don’t dig as deep.

Textile Socks

Fabric covers that slip over the tire. They work by increasing surface friction on ice rather than biting into snow, and they’re genuinely useful as a get-unstuck tool you can fit in two minutes. They wear out quickly, offer the least traction of the three, and are not accepted at many chain-control checkpoints. Treat them as emergency equipment, not a chain substitute.

Getting The Size Right

Chains are sold against specific tire sizes, and the fit is not forgiving. Read the full size off your sidewall — something like 225/65R17 — and match it to the manufacturer’s fitment chart. Do not assume chains that fit your last vehicle will fit this one, and do not assume the same chains work on both axles if your vehicle runs a staggered setup.

Before you buy, check your vehicle’s clearance. Many manufacturers explicitly prohibit chains on certain models, or permit only low-clearance cables, because there isn’t enough gap between the tire and the strut, control arm, or wheel well. That information is in your owner’s manual under winter driving, and ignoring it is how people put a chain through a brake line.

Chains go on the drive wheels. Front-wheel drive means the front; rear-wheel drive means the rear. For all-wheel and four-wheel drive, check the manual — most specify the front axle, but not all, and a few require four sets.

Fitting Them Without Losing A Finger

Practice once in your driveway before you ever need to do it for real. Fitting chains for the first time in the dark, in wind, on a shoulder with traffic going past, with cold hands, is miserable and genuinely dangerous.

The basic sequence: pull completely off the road onto a flat, firm surface. Drape the chain over the top of the tire and feed it down behind, with the hooks facing away from the tire so they can’t scratch the sidewall. Connect the inside fastener first, working by feel behind the wheel, then the outside. Take up the slack with the tensioner.

Then drive about 100 feet and stop to re-tension. Chains always settle after the first few rotations, and a chain that felt tight in the driveway will be loose after the first corner. A loose chain is the one that comes off and beats a hole in your wheel arch.

Driving On Chains

Chains impose a hard speed limit, and it’s lower than most people expect: 30 mph is the usual maximum, with some manufacturers specifying 25. This isn’t a comfort recommendation. Above that speed the centrifugal load starts to break links and fling them into your bodywork.

Everything else follows from that. No hard acceleration, no abrupt braking, no sharp steering inputs. Chains give you traction, not grip in the sporting sense — you can still slide, and the recovery margin is small. Leave a much larger following distance than feels necessary.

If you hear rhythmic slapping against the wheel well, stop immediately. That’s a chain that has worked loose, and every rotation you continue is another impact on paint, plastic, brake lines, or a wheel speed sensor.

When To Take Them Off

As soon as you’re on consistently bare pavement. Not at the end of the trip, not when you get home — when the snow stops.

Driving chains on dry road wears the links down fast, transmits heavy shock into your suspension and driveline, lengthens your braking distance, and chews the road surface. A set of chains that would last many seasons used properly can be ruined in a single stretch of clear highway.

When you pull them off, rinse the salt away and dry them before storage. Chains are steel, road salt is aggressive, and a rusted, seized set discovered at a checkpoint next winter is worth nothing to you.

Do You Actually Need Them?

If you live somewhere with real winter and drive on it regularly, a set of proper winter tires does far more for you across the whole season than chains do. Winter tires work at every speed, on every surface, without you standing in a snowbank to install them.

Chains earn their place in two situations: when you’re crossing a mountain pass with active chain control and the law requires them regardless of what tires you’re on, and when conditions get deep enough that even winter tires run out of answers. For a driver who sees that a handful of times a year, a set of cables in the trunk is cheap insurance.

For a driver who never leaves cleared city streets, chains are equipment you’ll carry for years and never fit. Spend the money on the tires instead.
